Guadalupe: Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe

The Monastery of Guadalupe is situated in quite a remote location in the beautiful Sierra de Guadalupe mountains. It is lesser wide known attraction in Extremadura, but it is weel known among the pilgrims after an image of the Virgin was seen by a shepherd. It was the most important monastery in the country for more than 4 centuries. Columbus named the Caribbean island after this place. Nowadays it is protected by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
