The castle is situated in the high part of Guadale. The route to the castle passes through a 15 metre tunnel gouged from solid rock and easily defended. The castle dates from the 11th Century, although the remains preserved are from the 12th century. The fortress is divided into 2 parts - one of them was intended as a local cemetery and the other for the defence of the population. First it was a Muslim settlement but then it became part of the Aragon Kingdom. Most of the existing remains date from this time, the period of Pedro IV.
