Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art (Diocesano de Arte Sacro) in Bilbao is housed in the old Dominican convent (Convento de la Encarnacion). It was opened in 1995 and there are displayed a collection of religious art and artifacts, including sculptures, paintings, furniture, silverware, and liturgical garments.
Museum sections and exhibitions:
1- st floor: exhibitions "Silver Work for Religious Ends", "Introibo ad Altare Dei", "Saint Eloy`s workshop", "Silver Work in Bizkaia", "Sacred Garments"
2-nd floor: visitors will find the exhibit "Manifestations of a People`s Faith", which includes primarily sculptures and paintings; the collection "Andra Maris" is particularly noteworthy, for it includes painted wood and stone images of the Virgin Mary and Christ from the XII-th to the XV-th centuries.
Other exhibitions: "The Middle Ages, Hispanic-Flemmish and Renaissance Art" (wood, stone and alabaster pieces, furniture and paintings), "XVII-th and XVII-th Century Barroque" (paintings from this period, among which the thirteen by Lucas Jordan - 1632-1705), "Neo-Classicism and the Modern Era" (work by Asorey, Urrutia, Romero de Torres and Moises Huerta, among others).
The museum has also a library specialising in religious art which is accessable after special permission.
