The Mother of the Emigrant

Monument Mother of the Emigrant (Monumento a la Madre del Emigrante) is situated at Paseo del Rinconín (Gijón, Asturias). The statue represents a women watching toward the sea, waving for goodbye with one of her hands. The author of the statue is Ramon Muriedas.
With the monument, Muriedas tried to capture the common between so many Asturias and people of Gijón who children going to search a better life.
It was installed there in 1970 and is the first modern sculpture installed at the public space of the city and there was lot of debates around it. Currently, it is one of the most characteristic sculptures of the city, with a strong symbolic meaning.
