The Fortress of Isabel II is located near port of Mao. It was built between 1848 and 1875 after a lot of pressure by the British, who were threatening to return to the island in order to use it as a base in their defensive operations against the French. Its strategic position above Mahon harbour mouth made it one of the key points in the island’s defence system. At present La Mola represents a valuable Historical Military Heritage, set in a natural environment of prime importance.
