Caves of Nerja

Caves of Nerja are located to the east of town of Nerja, near to the village of Maro. They are officially recognised as an historical and artistic monument and are one of the most important Prehistoric archaeological sites in Spain.
The caves dating back to some 5 million years ago and were first discovered in 1959. In 1960 part of the cave complex was opened to public.
Inside the caves were found many wall paintings dating to Paleolithic and post-Paleolithic period, and the skeleton remains (one placed at the entrance) - facts of human inhabit from about 25,000 BC up until the Bronze Age.
