Church de las Animas
Type: Church
Location: municipality Santiago de Compostela »
The church of Las Animas (the Souls) in Santiago de Compostela was built by Ferro Caaveiro in 1784 and later on modified by Ventura Rodriguez.
The repairs were paid with the alms of the pious of purgatory`s souls. In the facade, besides the big Ionian columns, we can see an interesting scene that shows the main purpose of this church: the prayer for the damned souls or for the ones who are in the purgatory. The pilgrims used to stop here and pray six Our Father to save the soul of one of their beloved beings. That says the tradition. The scene of the souls in the purgatory is engraved in terracotta, which is a very strange kind of stone in Galicia because it is not enough strong to bear humidity.
