Mosque in Almonaster la Real
Type: Mosque
The mosque (The Mezquita) in Almonaster la Real is sitauted at the hilltop in amongst the ruins of a Almonaster castle. It dates back to X century and is erected on the Visigoths and Romans basilica remains. This is one of the few surviving Spanish rural mosques.
The building is oddly-shaped, made of brick and stone in a trapezoid shape. Inside the well-restored interior there are five naves, the mihrab and many arches supporting the ceiling.
There is a very nice view from the mosque to the village and especially to the local bullring.
