Castle of San Jose

The Castle of San Jose (Castillo de San José) in Arrecife is a fortification, built in XVII-th century as a defence against pirates. It is located on a cliff, overlooking the sea and is surrounded by a moat. The building is two-storey with spacious halls and floors of black volcanic slabs.
In 1976 the castle was restored and from then its houses the Museum of Contemporary Art.
